The Santa Maria in Fiore Cathedral is one of the biggest existing churches. Its name comes from the golden flower that the city offered to Pope Eugenio IV. The cathedral is Gothic but with a strong caracterization of the Florence taste, with straightened lines and wide volumes. The original façade of Arnolfo Cambio, which was never finished, was pulled down during the XVI century. The most original and important part of the cathedral is the big masonry dome, 91 metres tall. The work was made by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Palazzo della Signoria is the political center of Florence. Here there is Palazzo Vecchio, la Loggia della Signoria and Palazzo degli Uffizi. In the square there are many sculptures that form an open air museum. Palazzo Vecchio was built between the end of the XIII and the beginning of the XIV century by the Medici architect Michelozzo and decorated later during the XVI century by Vasary. In the middle it is possible to appreciate the Verrocchio fountain. Iside the palace there are the XVI century hall, the Francesco de Medici study, the Gigli room and the maps room. Palazzo degli Uffizi was originarly built by Vasari as the florentine bureaucracy seat and it is today one of the most important museums of the world. Inside the Uffizi there are all the paintings of the Medici family, combined with works belonging to the Tuscany grand dukes, and represents the more complete survey of the Italian art works from the XIII to the XVII century. There are paintings of Cimabue, Giotto, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Paolo Uccello, Tiziano, Caravaggio, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Perugino, Bellini, Correggio, Giorgione. The most ancient of the Florence bridges is the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge spared by the second world war bombings. Its construction dates back to the XIV century but it was built by the Romans where the Arno river is more narrow. Then the first Roman colony of "Florentia" developed.
In the middle of Ponte Vecchio there are two panoramic archways. Over the bridge there is the Corridoio Vasariano that connects Palazzo Pitti to the Galleria degli Uffizi.
